Guest: Ivan Lee, Founder & CEO of Datasaur
We’re exploring how AI is reshaping the SaaS playbook—and what founders can do when the market changes underneath them.
In this episode of SaaS Backwards, Ivan Lee, founder and CEO of Datasaur, joins Ken Lempit to unpack what AI taught him about building, positioning, and selling SaaS in a rapidly changing market.
Datasaur began as a data annotation platform for machine learning teams. Then ChatGPT arrived, and the entire AI category shifted. Customers paused projects, churn increased, and the company’s existing go-to-market motion stopped producing the same results.
Rather than stay locked into the old SaaS model, Ivan and his team went back to fundamentals: listening to what customers were willing to pay for, solving the job to be done, and building private AI systems for enterprises that cannot send sensitive data to OpenAI, Anthropic, or other public model providers.
Ivan explains why tools like ChatGPT Enterprise and Microsoft Copilot are often a strong starting point, but not a complete AI strategy for regulated industries such as healthcare, legal, finance, insurance, and government. For these organizations, the real value comes from AI that understands proprietary data, internal workflows, and company-specific processes—without giving away the information that creates competitive advantage.
The conversation also covers how AI is changing SaaS GTM, why open source has become a powerful adoption path for AI developer tools, and why the next era of enterprise AI may look more like custom solution delivery than traditional software licensing.
